Ice Hotel, Sweden

ICEHOTEL, Kiruna, Sweden

There aren’t many properties that can boast of being not only the location for an iconic fashion campaign, but the inspiration for a Bond villain’s lair, but then Sweden’s IceHotel is not just any property. Located in the miniature village of Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland, where dogs almost outnumber permanent residents, the first and largest hotel in the world made entirely of snow and ice is constructed anew each year, turning river into art.

Construction begins in November, when the abstract designs of an elite group of international artists slowly become reality. By early January, there are multiple icy suites, each as individual as a snowflake, as well as a chapel and a bar, where drinks are served ‘in the rocks’, in glasses made of ice. Some 50,000 visitors from around the world come to see it each year, and the lucky are able to stay overnight.

Life-Enriching Moments

ICE HOTELAccommodation is offered on beds made entirely of ice, but with the addition of a toasty sleeping bag to snuggle up in.

Warm accommodation is also available, with chalet-style bedrooms, a lounge and sauna. And as extraordinary as sleeping comfortably in sub-zero temperatures may be, a stay here is also a chance to enjoy an Arctic experience like no other – nights snowmobiling in search of the elusive Northern Lights, dog sledding across frozen lakes and through Narnia-like landscapes of lakes, firs and snow.

There is the local Sami culture to be explored, delicious meals to be eaten, and crackling fires to be curled up beside, with a cup of warm lingonberry juice in hand (a Swedish favourite). With such a mix of comfort and adventure, it’s no wonder that IceHotel has been named one of the Seven Wonders of Sweden.

Old Homestead Restaurant

Situated only 800 metres from ICEHOTEL and overlooking the Torne River is the genuine Old Homestead. In this historical log building, dating from 1768, guests are offered a well composed dinner in a cosy environment.

Ice Church

The Ice Church titled ‘Lumen Aureus’, pays homage to the tradition of gilding, and daylight illumination through stained glass in medieval Christian churches. Gold leaf is used here to transform the natural light into a warm reflective glow. A substantial amount of clear ice is used in the design, with both end walls to the vault which is entirely transparent. Fourteen ice pews, rotated to focus on the alter space, serve this ethereal congregation.

Weddings At The Ice Church

The ice chapel that is right next to ICEHOTEL is opened every year on December 25th, whereby it is formally handed over to the Swedish Church.
