This is where it all began. It may be the smallest province in South Africa, but Gauteng is a heavy weight in commerce, fashion, culture, and lifestyle. Gauteng means ‘Place of gold’ in the Sotho language, hinting to the discovery of gold in Johannesburg in the late 1800s. A more important discovery that made this region famous is the Cradle of Humankind – the most comprehensive hominin site in the world.
Gauteng is the economic engine room of South Africa with Johannesburg being the major commercial hub and Pretoria being a Capital of South Africa – both these cities make up most of the territory of the Province. The fashionable city of Johannesburg is characterized by high-rise buildings, swish shopping districts, and a vibrant mix of people from all corners of the world. Many important milestones of South Africa’s journey to democratic freedom took place in Gauteng, making for interesting landmarks and attractions from Soweto to Rivonia. Johannesburg is home to the Apartheid Museum, Mandela House on Vilakazi Street, Freedom Park, and Lillies Farm, to name only a few.
