Mantis – A leading, conservation-focused hotel group
Borne of Africa and inspiring the globe
Mantis is a leading, conservation-focused hotel group with luxury hotels, eco-lodges and waterways are travel experiences located all over the world. Sustainable travellers have been enjoying eco-tourism, safaris and adventure travel with Mantis since 2000. Rooted in conservation, Mantis pursues sustainable business practices and develops tourism products that are respectful of the environment and communities in which they operate.
Whether small and intimate or vast and complex, on a sweeping African plain, bustling city, private tropical island or frozen snowscape, each is an exceptional place for guests to find themselves. While uniquely different in the experiences they offer, all are linked through a collective obsession to be extraordinary, to be rare in a world that mass-produces sameness.
A hotel group focused on the future of travel and sustainability
Mantis is a boutique hospitality group that was founded by conservationist Adrian Gardiner in 2000, with its main focus predominantly in South Africa. Mantis grew from Adrian’s vision to restore and rewild degraded farmland which he developed into the widely-acclaimed Shamwari Private Game Reserve. This was the first private game reserve in the Eastern Cape and the beginning of eco-tourism in a poverty-stricken province that had few opportunities outside of commercial farming. Adrian and the Mantis team successfully created a place where man and nature could co-exist sustainably.
From this initial success, the Mantis model was then developed worldwide, understanding that consumers could use the Mantis portfolio as a mark of quality, consistency and character. Today the diverse portfolio of handpicked properties links up to create travel journeys, which offer guests the opportunity to experience the essence of the location in a setting of tailored luxury.
Mantis is acclaimed for its pioneering work in Development, Management, Marketing, Education & Conservation. This expertise also allows us to curate luxury hospitality experiences that are geared towards luxury travel, with conservation-focused experiences. From a b2b perspective, through consolidating and combining strategies from our five divisions, Mantis is well-positioned to offer Owners and Developers a full turnkey solution; from concept development and construction to operations, management, sales and marketing, with each step supported and solidified in our ethos of Conservation, Education and Sustainability.
What sets Mantis apart, from other hotel brands?
In April 2018, Accor – the world’s second-largest hotel group – gained a 50% stake in the Mantis Group. This Strategic partnership and acquisition illustrated Accor’s strategy to expand its footprint in Africa, and reinforce its position in curated one-of-a-kind experiences, whilst continuing both parties conservation and sustainability goals. This partnership has, in turn, allowed Mantis to increase its distribution and loyalty network on a global scale.
This strategic partnership was accompanied by the creation of the Community Conservation Fund Africa (CCFA), a non-profit organization (NGO) which aims to amplify both Groups’ commitment towards preventing the accelerating decline of Africa’s wildlife and bringing together three internationally renowned conservation organizations – Wilderness Foundation, Tusk Trust and African Parks.
Mantis consistently curates, collects, and discovers destinations and experiences that stir the soul, defy expectations, and live in the heart forever. We will do anything in our power to advance the cause of sustainability and to promote further appreciation of the land, its creatures, and our communities. We believe that rarities must be protected. We achieve our sustainability goals through our foundation, the CCFA, and through our Mantis Impact Experiences division.

Mantis Brand USP’s
Mantis has three main pillars which can be seen throughout all our hospitality offerings and can be felt through all of our staff. These passions encapsulate our ethos and form the golden thread which set Mantis apart in a world of sameness.
All aspects of our business model are conservation and sustainability-focused. We believe in fostering a human and nature connection and inspire our guests to adopt our philosophy, by providing experiences that connect guests to nature and enhance their perspective on life. Mantis has founded an NPC (CCFA) which raises funds for and implements community and conservation projects. These include the procurement of sustainable products to be used and sold in all Mantis properties.
We are off-the-beaten-track; our hotels are integrated into the destination. We celebrate the authenticity, heritage, and culture of a destination through service, culture, and design. We employ locals and do whatever we can to support our neighboring communities. We use locally sourced food and resources and promote indigenous designers, artists, and other local talents.
A successful business model combining tourism and conservation-focused adventures. Tailor-made experiences that steer away from mass production: hotels, eco-lodges, and waterways. We promote adventures that have been carefully crafted and made available without harming the natural world.
