Om on the Range: Yoga in the Montana Wilderness

It’s possible that there are better places on earth to practise yoga than on a wooden deck over a cold, clear lake (part of our luxury ranch in Montana, The Ranch at Rock Creek), the sun warm on your shoulders and the legendary big sky reflecting both above and below you, while green mountains stretch as far as the eye can see.

It’s possible, but residents of Montana, who claim their state is the “last best place on earth” probably wouldn’t agree. It’s certain that the 6,600 acres on which the ranch is situated are some of the most beautiful and peaceful you’ll find, from open meadows to craggy ridges to sparkling alpine lakes. The air is fresher here, the sky is bluer, and whether you’re a seasoned yogi or an absolute beginner, it’s the perfect place to bust out a downward dog.

Fortunately, the luxury ranch in Montana has everything you need, from simply being able to lend you a yoga mat for your room, to providing private sessions at the Granite Spa. Here you can enjoy a practice tailored to your level, strengthening the body, deepening the breath and quieting the mind. And while the Spa is a great place to harmonise body and mind, you’re certainly not limited to its soothing oatmeal-coloured walls. Together with an instructor, you can arrange to go on a hike or a trail ride to one of the incredible viewpoints on the property, taking advantage of 360 degree vistas and that fresh mountain air. It makes for a dynamic and memorable session, out in the great wide open.

If you’re looking to get more active, there are a huge range of options from hiking and mountain biking to archery and fly fishing. The ranch also has a fitness centre open to guests, where you’ll find state-of-the-art gym equipment. And since it’s all about balance, there’s a pool and Jacuzzi, as well as a range of treatments on offer at the spa. Perhaps that state slogan is correct after all – a few days here and you’ll certainly feel like you’ve been to the last best place on earth.
